Paros is an island that has always belonged to the sea.

Long before its whitewashed villages, beach bars and summer evenings became part of the modern Cycladic experience, Paros was already a place of movement, exchange and discovery. Its story stretches back thousands of years, shaped by the people who settled here, the civilizations that passed through, the marble extracted from its mountains and, above all, its position in the Aegean.

Today, when we leave the harbor and look back towards the island from the water, it is easy to imagine how different Paros must have looked centuries ago, and yet how familiar its relationship with the sea remains.

The earliest evidence of human settlement on Paros dates back thousands of years. At nearby Saliagos, the small islet between Paros and Antiparos, archaeologists discovered the remains of a Neolithic settlement dating from around 4300–3900 BC. Its inhabitants were fishermen, hunters and farmers, already living closely with the surrounding landscape and waters.

Paros continued to develop throughout the Cycladic period, with settlements appearing across the island. Its location placed it naturally within the network of islands and maritime routes that connected the Aegean.

And then came the marble. Parian marble became one of the island's most celebrated treasures. Fine, white and almost translucent, it was prized in antiquity and used for some of the most important works of Greek sculpture. The famous marble travelled far beyond the island, carrying a piece of Paros with it.

But Paros was more than a source of marble. By the 7th century BC, the island had developed into an important naval power. Its ships travelled across the Aegean and beyond, establishing colonies and connecting Paros with other parts of the ancient world.

This maritime heritage is one of the reasons the story of Paros feels so naturally connected to what we do today.

Even our name is rooted in the island's past.

Yrian comes from Yria, one of the ancient names associated with Paros. Over the course of its long history, the island was known by several names, including Paktia, Dimitrias, Yria, Yliessa, Plateia and Kavarnis.

For us, Yrian is more than a name. It is a quiet connection between the Paros of yesterday and the Paros we invite our guests to discover today. Because the best way to understand an island is often to look at it from the sea.

From the water, Paros reveals another side of itself. The familiar coastline becomes a landscape of secluded bays, rocky formations, beaches and small islands. Antiparos appears across the horizon. Despotiko emerges beyond the southern coast. The Cyclades unfold around you, just as they have for generations of sailors and travellers.

The sea has always been a way of reaching somewhere. But in the Aegean, it has also been a way of experiencing somewhere.

Today, a private cruise from Paros might take you to a quiet cove for a morning swim, across to Antiparos for lunch, or further into the Cyclades in search of places that can only truly be appreciated from the water. The vessels may have changed. The engines may have replaced the sails. But the instinct remains the same: to leave the shore behind and see where the sea takes you.

That is the spirit behind Yrian. A name inspired by ancient Paros. A company shaped by the Aegean. And a way of traveling that has been part of this island's story for thousands of years. Perhaps this is what makes exploring Paros by boat feel so special.

You are not simply discovering an island. You are following a route that has been travelled, in one form or another, for centuries.
